Question 7

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the College magazine), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product

I have learnt  a great deal more since producing the preliminary task, which was creating a college magazine. Especially with the tools, software and knowledge of magazines. I have learnt a great deal when it came to the Two software programs I used, Photoshop and InDesign. I had used more photography in my final product, whereas I only taken a few shots of photography for my preliminary task.

When it comes to the covers, you will see that the layout itself has improved and that the final product has been produced with a lot of detail and many different magazine conventions, where as the college magazine is much more simpler and has only a couple. Photography has also improved, with the college magazine an image of photography had a medium close up and no editing was used. With the final product the distance of the photography used is a medium long shot at eye level, with the model standing in position with the pose which links to the headline.

The contents page has also evolved since the college magazine. Layering and  scaling has been thought of when creating the final product. More conventions have been used again and the photography that has been used.

When it comes to knowledge, I have learnt a lot about how magazines are produced and what is need to produce a good piece of work. Needing a style and target audience and how to cater for that audience and to be able to sell .

Question 6

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The software that I mostly used in my product was in design and some elements of Photoshop, while for my blogs I had used some multi media sites to present my work such as Google drive and capzals. The reason for the use of Google drive was to create my audience questioners which would help me to collect data from who had taken part in the questionnaires, this was to get a better understanding of who I would be working to create a magazine for and the styles and content needed to be able to please the audience. For capzals I had created a capzals in order to present my work clearly to the audience of my blog, the content which was put on to capzals was the Images I had taken for my photo shoot . The Photo shoot was so I was able to use the photography I shot and use it for my music magazine.

For my magazine its self, in order to create it I had used two software programs, which were Photoshop and InDesign. When using Photoshop I had used the basics of cutting and layering images for my magazine and how to get the best results. The only use of Photoshop was to improve and edit photos so they were up to standard when placing the images on the magazine. While using  InDesign for the rest of the creating on the magazine. There were different types of tools I was having to learn and the formats of  what a magazine should look like. another point to be made when making the magazine is to get the sizing and scaling right throughout the magazine.

The tools I used with Photoshop were;

  • quick selection tool
  • crop tool
  • blur tool

With the quick selection tool I was able to outline the object I want and once that happened was able to create a new layer with only the object its self. The tool was an option to get rid of background and being able to have only the model on the front cover of my music magazine. With the crop tool, I am able to size the picture to the scale I want. While with the blur tool, I used this to smooth out the lines of my images I had cut out from the backdrops. This is so that the edge of the image was smooth and clean cut as possible.

The tools I used with InDesign were;

  • selection tool,
  • direct selection tool
  • type tool
  • rectangle frame tool
  • rectangle tool

With the selection and the direct selection tool I am able to arrange and scale objects that I have made. The object you are wanting to alter must be selected in order to be able to control that selected object.
With the text tool I am able to type text for my magazine. There are many styles of text you can pick and choose with lots of variety, you are also able to pick the size of the text.
Another tool that i found helpful was the rectangle frame tool. I had used this to be able to scale and arrange my magazine before the process of producing the magazine this is translucent . While the rectangle tool was used to make boxes and build up layers in the magazine. With this tool there are more shapes to choose from, occasionally I used a circular shape as well. When wanting to have text in boxes its best to have text then a second box, this is because its easier and the best way to have the right scaling, and far easier to arrange and alter.

Question 5

With my magazine I have based it around pop indie; I have used black and white to link with indie and with the purple for pop. With the models one is pop while the other is indie. The magazine is needing to be bold and bright in order for potential audiences to catch it and to see it through all the other covers. Bright colors are used for the clothing of the model who is the pop artist Natalie, where as tartan shirt and leather skirt is used for the model who is the artist Eileen.

When opening up to the contents page you are able to the range of articles; gossip, news, reviews and fashion. This is so that the people who are not fully into music will be catered to also. This is so that I can draw the potential readers in more and wanting to turn over to the next page.

With the double page spread, I created a magazine article about two artists, that are new and existing in the music industry. I believe that the magazine should have an article about handling fame and with the artists around the same age as the target audience, which is teens 15+, they are able to relate to the artists. They also listen to how fame hasn't changed them and that the music is what counts and how to get through to the audience is their job. This helps the audience feel that they care for their fans and that gives them reason to feel comfortable about themselves. The magazine is age appropriate and no 'sex sells' style in what so ever.

Question 2

In magazines you are more than likely to see the lifestyle the artists have and how they live their life, as they are constantly in the spotlight. Sometimes its not even about the music, its about how much they earn or how reckless they were the night before. Its not just the singers actors and sportsman do this also.

Two YouTube videos that I have placed on this page are of Miley Cyrus, in the past and now. what you can see is the style of pop that she once had, has changed and evolved so much and now is much different than before. she started the pop business when she was at the start of her teens and now after a few years is now trying to shed the image she once had. She is now using shock factor when it comes to producing and selling music.

 The first clip is from when Miley Cyrus was in  the Disney company, this was  when her style of pop music was aimed for children and had the bubble gum, sweet and innocent. The style of which she dresses  is also a main factor of this, the stereotypical,  Disney princess of pop attire; pink and sparkles and glitter, make up to the minimal.  With the Disney company make these
stars and have the children look up to them and follow them and copy their actions. This is because children are like sponges and absorb all information and copy actions from adults as they believe this is the right way to go.

The second video, is of Cyrus a couple of years after leaving the Disney company, as well as her role as a role model to younger audiences. This shows that she is in the progression of shedding her image from one target audience to another. The new target audience for Cyrus is now older teens and young adults. As she is trying to sell to older audience, the way she promote herself has also changed. shes now selling with sex and adult themes. The music style is now not just pop, she

Another Disney star that was selling with the same audience as Cyrus and now the video that is shown, is aimed towards children and young teen girls audiences, with pop/dance music. Selena Gomez, like Cyrus, was left the Disney crew to sell to a wider range of audiences. Now she is transitioning into catering for young adults, as she is growing up her music changes and 'grows up' with her.

Another successful type in the Pop industry are boy bands, They are versatile and  have many target audience groups; children, young teen and older teen girls. They sell to these audiences as the girls are supposed to find these boys attractive and successful. So this sells, not only do they sell their music they sell merchandise of their band, making huge profit.

The video below is an insight of how bands sell in a clever and comical way.

Question 1

Here is question one of my evaluation. The question that I was answering was;
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
